Juni 2001) WASHINGTON (AP) - A federal appeals court reversed the breakup of Microsoft Thursday and ordered that a new judge decide the landmark case. It was a major victory for the embattled software maker. The appeals court ruled unanimously that U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson improperly conducted himself in the case, leaving himself open to the appearance he was biased against Microsoft. Jackson ruled Microsoft had engaged in anti-competitive practices by packaging its Windows operating system with its Explorer Web browser. He concluded the company was an illegal monopoly and ordered the software giant broken into two as a penalty. By vacating the ruling, the appeals court sent the case back to the lower court but ordered that a different judge handle the decision on how to punish Microsoft. The appeals court affects only Jackson's decision on the breakup - not his conclusion that the company violated antitrust laws. *** Apple Computer to open 25 stores (Do, 17. Mai 2001) McLEAN, Va. (AP) - Apple Computer Inc. president Steve Jobs announced plans Tuesday to open 25 Apple stores across the country in the computer maker's first venture into direct retail sales. The company now relies mainly on resellers, large electronics retailers and its own Web site to sell its products. Jobs said that the retail stores, which will be placed in high-end malls and high-end retail locations, represent Apple's best way to reach out to the 95% of computer users who don't use Apple products.
